Today I take a brief respite from the review grind–The Graveyard Boo review is coming soon–to plug a great new podcast produced by the friendly people over at SFFaudio.

SFFaudio announces and reviews recent and forthcoming audio productions of fantasy and science fiction, be they audiobooks, dramatizations, or podcasts. The site’s tireless crew post several updates each day chock full of information about the latest audio releases. A comprehensive author list also helps visitors quickly find audio versions of their favorite works.

Recently, SFFaudio has launched its own podcast. Given the premise of the site, I’m surprised this wasn’t done sooner. Then again, I know how challenging it is to launch and maintain a podcast, so I shouldn’t be too quick to criticize. At any rate, better late than never. This podcast is everything I’d expect from a group of geeks who eat, sleep, and breathe audio books. It’s refreshing to find a forum for serious discussion of narrative techniques of not only fantasy/sci-fi authors but the narrators who bring the written word to life.

The first episode I listened to, for instance, featured a discussion of whether it is preferable to listen to an author read his or her own work. The two hosts came to very different conclusions in this matter, but the discussion remained amicable and did not devolve into the petty squabbling sometimes found on other podcasts.

For someone like me who’s legally blind, SFFaudio and its podcast are indispensable resources. While I can and do read print on a regular basis, I process material far better and more quickly in audio format. Keeping up with the latest releases and trends in the audio renditions of works in my favorite genre, therefore, is of the utmost importance, and I’m glad to have found a fix!
